This is the painting that started my watercolor career. My oldest daughter was born in 1995. I was in my studio and she was playing on the floor. I had put a mirror in front of her and I notice the reflection on her face. The perspective was amazing. This moment sparked a vision in seeing through the eyes of child. This vision of perspective, color and light is what I strive to achieve in my paintings. |

Life
of a Painter - Judy LewLoose I wrote this story about my journey to encourage others who aspire to be artists. I want to encourage and support their goals and dreams. You have to believe in yourself, even though you feel the world is against you. If you want to make history, you have to break barriers and follow your own path. Leaders are not followers. It is a painful battle within yourself. Through rejection and failure, comes promise. You can succeed if you try.
After graduating from Valley High School, 1982, I went to the Academy of Art in San Francisco to study Fine Art. I slowly realized that sleeping on the floor with rats and cockroaches was not the way to live. I felt one step away from being homeless. I was the one carrying a backpack and wandering around for a decade. Always lost. I always dreamed of going to art school in New York City, so I transferred to Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. I switched my major to Communication Design so I could support myself. I have a BFA in Communications Design. But in my heart, I still wanted to become a painter. I lived in a basement room with no windows. Feeling trapped and isolated, the homeless feeling lurks once more. (This is why my compassion for the homeless is so great.) After cohabitating there for a few years, I woke up one morning and realized that I would never have the house with the white picket fence. So, I moved back home to Sacramento and got a job as a Sr. Graphic Designer. At the age of 29, I got married and had a daughter. It was the birth of my daughter, that gave me the true inspiration to paint. I've been painting watercolors for over two decades now. I work full-time and have two amazing daughters. I paint or draw every night when they go to bed. My artistic struggles have been difficult, trying to balance work, family, my health and my art. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed, frustrated and stuck against time. But I am honest with myself and I know what I want to accomplish.
